Guru Shishya tradition which was the gift of India: Dr Basavaraj Gadgay
KALABURAGI; The Regional Director of the Regional Office of the Visvesvaraya Technologic;l University (VTU) Dr Basavaraj Gadgay on Saturday reminded the teachers that they have the onerous responsibility of training the students as the nation building blocks and carry forward the concept of Gurukul and Guru Shishya tradition which was the gift of India to the world and the teachers should enrich it with their rich experience.
Speaking at the Teachers Day celebrations organized at the Sharnbasva University in Kalaburagi city, Dr Gadgay said that the teachers have an important place in the society and it is for this reason the Birthday of the first Vice President and Second President of the Country Dr S Radhakrishnan is celebrated as a national festival and as teachers day in the country every year. “No other President’s birthday is celebrated as a national festival in India and this is the great honour showered on Dr Radhakrishnan who is considered first as the teacher than as the Vice President of India”.
Showering praises on the Chancellor of the University Poojya Dr Sharnbaswappa Appaji for his immense contribution in the field of Education, Dr Gadgay said that setting up a Private University in the backward region like Kalaburagi is not an easy task and Dr Appaji who is a visionary educationist who was primarily responsible for converting the region into a educational hub had gone one step ahead and established the Sharnbasva University, which is a milestone in the annals of Karnataka.
Dr Gadgay called upon the teaching staff of the University to put in some extra effort to convert this University into a world Class university in the near future. Dr Gadgay who has been recently elected as the Governing Council Member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) urged the teachers of the engineering faculty to enroll themselves as the members of the IETE and take full benefit of the facilities including internships and other facilities.
Secretary of the Sharnbasveshwar Vidya Vardak Sangha ,Mr Basavaraj Deshmukh in his address said that the teachers are held in high esteem by Poojya Dr Appaji and the Guru-Shishya tradition was the main pillar of the Sharanabsaveshwar Peeta and this tradition introduced in 19th Century by Lord Sharnabasaveshwar is followed and nourished by the successive Peetathipathis. The concept of Gnana Dasoha introduced by present Peetathipathi Dr Appaji was the direct result of the Guru-Shishya tradition and his esteemed affection to the teaching community.
Vice Chancellor of the University Dr Niranjan V Nisty in his presidential remarks said that unless education sector is given adequate attention by the planners, the economic development of the country was not possible. The present investment of around 8 billion dollars by the government in education and another eight million dollars by the private educational institution was nothing when compared to the actual demand of more than 400 million dollars investment in education sector.
Dr Nisty said that the teachers role has become more important with the union government’s decision to go ahead with the implementation of the New Education Policy and pointed out that the teacher has the capacity to change the future of the student with his inspiration and instilling a sense of curiosity among the students.
