week long International Webinar on ‘Global / Native Shakespeares
Kalaburagi: The morningsession of a week long International Webinar on ‘Global / Native Shakespeares’ (21-28 Sept.2020), Organised by Department of English, Central University of Karnataka,Kalaburgi, started off by a talk delivered by Mr.Mahendra M.(Asst.Prof.Central University of Karnataka, Kalburgi.) on the topic ‘A Counter Narrative of Subversion and Resistance in Shakespeare’s Othello.
In his elaborate talk, Mr.Mahendra M.delineated on the racist, anti-feminist and colonial narratives in Shakespeare’s Othello. Further in his talk, Mr.Mahendra M. defined the counter narrative, subversion and resistance. In his Post colonial reading of Othello,he emphasized on the racial overtones present in the playby referring to the works of Frantz Fanon and Toni Morrison.
The session was chaired by Dr.ManaliKarmarkar. In her observations,she has pointed out the physical violence incurred upon the women characters in the play and suggested a deep study into it from feminist view point.
The evening session of the webinar began with the talk delivered by Dr. Sajaudeen Nijamodeen Chapparban, (Asst.Prof. Central University of Gujrat,Gandhi Nagar) on the topic ‘ A Psycho Analytical Study of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar’.
Dr.Chapparban, in his deliberation of the topic, has discussed the play as riddled with puzzles and drew attention it’s multi layered narrative. In his Freudian reading of the text, Dr.Chapparban touched upon the various aspects of psycho analytics. He concluded the talk with emphasizing the need to study the play from the perspective of psycho analytics theory.
The session was chaired by Dr. Santosh Kumar (Dept. Of English and Foreign Languages, IGNTU). In his observations, Dr. Santosh Kumar has underlined the importance of Freudian reading of Shakespeare’s plays, especially Julius Caesar.
The chairman of the webinar,Prof.B.P. Donur,Head, Department of English, Dean, School of Humanities and Languages,Central University of Karnataka, Kalburgi,in his remarks, concluded that there are many possibilities of interpretation in reading Shakespearean canon and once again underlined the importance of the Bard, William Shakespeare.
The morning session was moderated by Mrs. RenukaL.Nayak (Asst.Prof, Dept.ofEnglish,Central University of Karnataka, Kalburgi) whereas the evening session was moderated by Mr. Mahendra M. The session was graced by the presence of the faculty membersProf. N. Nagraju, Mrs.RenukaL.Nayak, Mr. Mahendra M. and Dr.Mahima Raj C. Both thesessions ended cheerfully by offering vote of thanks to the Chair.

In his remarks, Prof.N.Nagaraju observed that justice in the play is reformative not retributive. He also underlined the nature of corruption and authority.The chairman of the webinar,Prof.B.P. Donur,Head, Department of English, Dean, School of Humanities and Languages,Central University of Karnataka, Kalburgi,in his remarks, concluded that Shakespeare’s plays should also be read as the political plays and emphasized the need of excessive reading of Shakespeare by the students of English Literature.
