Students of SBR qualify to represent Karnataka in the National level science competition
KALABURAGI; Two set of students of the Sharanabasaveshwar Residential Public School have qualified in the Junior and Senior category to represent Karnataka in the National level competition organized as part of the 31st National Children’s Science Congress with their innovative science projects
Principal of the School Mr N S Devarkal said in Kalaburagi city on Wednesday that the four students, two each in the Junior and senior level would be part of the 30 set of students who would present their science projects at the National level competition scheduled in the month of April. The venue and the final dates of the final competition has not yet been finalised.
While Bhavani S Ashtagi who is the team leader and Bhumika M Belle under the guidance of teacher Pooja Patil qualified in the Junior category with her project on how junk food affected girls in the early adolescence and Ayesha Tahereem, the team leader and Athiqua Tasneem who is the member of the team under the guidance of teacher Ashwini Chavan qualified in the senior category with her innovative project “Multitasker Water Hyacinth-Pollution to Solution” to be part of the Karnataka contingent which would present their science project for top honours at the national level.
According to Team leader Ayesha Tahereem, the project which won appreciation and accolades from the judges dealt on how the Water Hyacinth, considered to be a menace in the water bodies affecting majority of the species living in the water bodies by reducing the oxygen levels in the water, can be used to produce paper, furniture, bags, hats, carpets, vases, biogas biofuel, antifungal medicines, fusion sarees and others. As per the project, this water plant can also be used as an edible supplement in the cattle feed which is more beneficial to the lactating mother cows and calf’s.
Ms Tahereem said that the processed water hyacinth added with “Azolla”, a protein rich water fern as a cattle feed offers numerous nutritional benefits to livestock’s. The high protein content in these plants aids in muscle development, improve milk production and help in overall growth of the cattle. The fiber present in the water hyacinth and Azolla promoted healthy digestion in cattle.
The project presented by Bhavani and Bhumika,8th Standard students in the school which has been selected for the national completion under the junior category dealt with the problem of how Junk food affected girls in early adolescence. The project points out of how the intake of junk food regularly leads to early “Menarche” (the first menstrual period in a female adolescent) accompanied with rapid body growth and the early period of puberty leads to other risk factors including ovarian cancer, hormonal imbalance and irregular periods. Apart from this other health risks of consuming the junk food as per the study conducted by the students led to obesity and overweight leading to early adolescence.
The 8th Mahadasoha Peetathipathi of the Sharnbasveshwar samasthan Poojya Dr Sharnbaswappa Appaji, who is also the president of the Sharanabasaveshwar Vidya Vardak Sangha, Chairperson of the Sangha Matoshree Dr Dakshayini Avvaji, and Secretary of the Sangha Mr Basavaraj Deshmukh congratulated the students and the guide teachers for their commendable achievement.
